The Light At The End of The Tunnels...

So this Friday theres a party at the Tunnels in Grahamstown.. The first Tunnels party of the year, in fact. And boy are we amped.


This time round, Tunnels is going mega - bringing you the Craziest DJs and acts, Baddest Sound, and Sickest Tunnels party yet.
Bass and sound powered by Jah Africanstone and line up is as follows:

Terravita's Up In The Club

Terravita have been gaining a lot of attention, and quite a bit of success on the Beatport D'nB and Dubstep charts, and since we haven't had a D'nB post in a while, I thought it was only fitting that we do one featuring them and on of their biggest tracks, "Up In The Club".

Don't let the cliche-ness of name or the fact that it sounds like some pop song put you off, because it is as far away from that as you can get. True Drum 'n Bass grit, no poppy influences or electro cross-overs (like in some other D'nB songs of late), just  classic rolling, awesome D'nB.

Traktor Pro 2.0

Yeah, so its probably old news by now, but being faithful Traktor users and fans, we here at Electric Oz just had to have our lil' say...

So, for those of you who don't know, the new version of Traktor Pro is set to be released in April. Traktor has been one of the most influencial and game-changing things for DJs internationally. The release of this new version means the next step in the evolution of digital DJing. However, with this step comes the question of its purposes, improvements and features. If you're looking for technical run-down and specs, head over to the review by the awesome dudes at DJTechtools at Traktor Pro 2 Review.

From our side, we compiled just a random little list of features we thought could be cool in the new Traktor, our very own wishlist...

What We'd Like:

Deck Over-lay View
Just as an idea, a viewing area between the left and right sides and their respective decks, where the two wave-forms can be viewed over each-other. Although this may seem a little VDJ-ish, the possibilities and options it opens up, especially for using the newly added sample-decks and one-shot sample drops while playing, are truly quite large.

Key Detection
How awesome would it be if Traktor detected he key every song loaded and analyzed, showed which songs share key or are mixable across the in-key system, and gave you the option to label it according to "mood" or "vibe"? Not only would it make mixing in-key virtually effortless, but it would also make mixing and song selection quicker, more effective, and easier.

Synth Plug-In
If Traktor could use a built-in or external synth (such as sampler, drum machine or MIDI-controlled synth) in one of the decks, it would make live performances much more versatile and give hundreds more possibilities for expanding from just DJing to things such as producing live.

Ice-Cream Maker
Wouldn't it be awesome if Traktor could make an ice-cream for you while you're mixing? Nah, but in all seriousness Traktor and the good folks over at Native Instruments seem to have most of the angles really well covered, and while there are a few little things on our Traktor Pro 2 features wishlist (hope you guys are reading this, NI) we literally can't wait for it to be released.

Anyway, for all the wishes we can make about Traktor, we have to give big ups for its evolution, its influences and effects on the industry, and for the release of the new version...

Makin' Bass, Snappin' Necks

Ok, I'll say it. You will love or hate this song. Caspa has missioned back to his true bass-ic roots and old school style. "Neck Snappah" brings back that heavy filthy low-frequency stuff now known as classic dubstep bass, and re-energizes it.

Truth be told, its dang heavy and is quite an acquired taste - I actually rather disliked it the first few times I heard it, but in the way only Caspa tracks seem to, it has succeeded in growing on me and now snaps my neck everytime...

Love it or hate it, respect has to be given to one of the fathers of dubstep. I guarantee that this track is going to be banging head and snappin' necks in no time at all.

Getting Nowhere (But Doing It Amazingly)

Since Skream, Benga and Artwork decided to tackle the commercial market with their formation of the trio "Magnetic Man" they have released several chart hits, a few featuring British vocalist Katy B. Benga also produced a single for her, titled "Katy On A Mission".

Being somewhat of a dub-purist, I have to admit my weary and slightly disappointed vibes when these cats began down the more pop-y road. "Perfect Stranger" and "I Need Air" (in my opinion) fall more under the classification of electronic-pop or dance, rather than the dubstep that the three were producing so craftily before their teaming-up. However, credit had to be given with the release of these tracks since they are admittedly huge  commercial successes and extremely well produced.

With the last song of the album, and their latest single to be released, the trio have given me new hope and restored (quite a lot of) my faith in them. "Getting Nowhere" is beautiful, and although very chilled and not a banger or Neck Snappah (excuse the pun!), still has a body-moving vibe to it. Featuring John Legend on the track was truly a wise move - his voice and vocal style suit the song and its feel perfectly and compliment the lyrics of the song very well.

Anyway, I'm getting a little carried away again, so here's the track:

Delta Heavy are a D 'n B duo out of the UK with a shitload of talent in the bassline-creating sphere and a knack for producing tunes with a tendency to turn heads and move bodies.

Alpha Centauri: Sci-fi Splendours

Noisia recently released a track titled "Alpha Centauri". And boy, does it kick. It's been released as its own single (alongside some rocking remixes) as well as on the "Split The Atom" album. The original follows true Noisia style and combines the pace and rolling rhythm of old school drum 'n bass with some rather nasty synths. The Excision & Datsik Remix, on the other hand, somehow succeeds in evil-ifying and darkening the already bad-ass sound, and in E & D class, creates some really serious build-ups and breaks.

Wob-wob-wob wobble Factor!

Tonight at Tokyo Star in Greenside, Joburg, Bromodragonfly, Phizicist & Crossman, LVS, Twelv (of Twelv & Thesis), and yours truly (including some other rather rad DJs) are gonna be making sure all your lil' bit wobble!
If last week's insane (albeit somewhat last minute) gathering at the same venue is anything to go by, this one is going to be big. Nastily, filth-ily, grime-ily, wobbly big.
So make sure you don't be lame and miss out. Because make no mistake, if you're not there, yeah, you will.

BEWARE THE SKRILLEX-ASAURUS...

Some like their beats with a soothing cup of tea; some bass extends to the need for a double espresso... It is highly recommended you employ a bottle of straight Vodka as you sit down (or rather stand up) for Sonny Moore.

Mau5trap’s latest concubine takes you out of your comfort zone with intense skinny beat electro combined with deep-set, collarbone vibrating bass. Congratulations, you have officially been bombarded with one of the most innovative artists currently dominating the music scene.

Skrillex was a consistent feature at this year’s Rezonance NYE festival, with “My Name is Skrillex” encapsulating more than just the Dubfest Dance floor. Essentially, Skrillex is in and if you haven’t heard of him, you’re clearly not.

If you looking for stats, try Google. If you are looking for opinions, you have found the place.

With Scary Monsters and Nice Sprite serving as an introduction to the little star, various other prominent DJs have seized the opportunity to create their own remixes and inject their own interpretations of the language which is bass. For a more electro feel, the Zeds Dead remix is highly recommended although my personal favourite, the Noisia remix, incorporates a heavier set of more frequent bass than the original. A track often over looked is that of “Fucking Die”, a personal favourite complimented only by the Cooper Remix.

If you are not already using a side-plate to collect your salivating need for more Skrillex, try Slats Slats Slats. In fact, do it anyway.

Dubstep SA - Keeping The Local Bass Big

Check out this rad collective known as Dubstep SA... Their aim is to promote and enlarge the local bass scene - and boy have they done more than that! One simply needs to flashback to any one of the various events they've put together at venues such as Pretoria's Stone Lion Cafe, and several others; or check them out online; to see what a growing impact the Dubstep SA collective (comprised of DJs Crossman & Phizicist, and BromoDragonFly) is having on the dubstep scene in South Africa at large.

Let me kick off the new year on this blog with some true slammers, and wave goodbye to 2010...

But first, apologies are in order, for the absolute lack of posts and links... In all honesty, I was out of the clawing grasp of the net. So truly, my good 'steppas, I do apologise. The good news is however, that during all the time I have been away from the blog I've heard and got hold of some brand new bangin' tunes to please your little ears.

I was fortunate enough to experience the festive season in the Cape - and (somehow) made it to the awesomeness that is the Rezonance NYE Festival outside Cape Town. As a piece of advice coming from an avid basshead and music fest fan, try and get there at least once. Although the main focus was on the PsyTrance and Goa stage, the Dubstep stage easily held its own and (coupled with an awesome NYE countdown) really brought wicked bass.

One of the acts which really shone and generated some heavy stepping was proudly South African Glitch/Hip Hop duo, Jam Jarr. Comprised of (MC) BakaMan and (DJ) Soundproof their tune "Lets Get High" did more than just pump the crowd up, so here they are, just for you nice people:

On the international scale, some pretty wicked tunes have been popping up all over the place, just in time for the great party season and the new year. Two of which I am sure most of you are familiar with, and seem bound to be classics:
